Antistatic safety footwear

If you are looking for occupational footwear that can prevent the accumulation of electrostatic charges on your body, then I recommend antistatic safety footwear. It’s the most common electrical property among safety shoes.Antistatic safety footwear

In this article I will answer the most frequently asked questions about antistatic safety footwear, to help you find the perfect product for you needs!

In what cases should antistatic safety shoes be used?

  • if you don’t need insulating safety footwear (which is the opposite)
  • If you need to reduce the amount of static electricity on your body when you’re working

What standards do they comply with?

S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5 safety shoes must be antistatic, as described in the standard UNI EN ISO 20345. Indeed, most workers wear antistatic shoes. Only shoes belonging to the SB category don’t have to be antistatic compulsorily. Non-antistatic footwear, such as conductive or insulating safety shoes, have the corresponding marking (C, I).

Antistatic safety shoes are subject to a specific test to measure their electrical resistance. In dry and humid atmosphere, it is between 0,1 MΩ and 1000 MΩ (from 100 kΩ to 1000 MΩ). Of course, antistatic safety shoes don’t guarantee any protection against potential electric shocks: for that you will need insulating safety shoes, which, as their name suggests, insulate the feet from electricity.

Robert Frog
I was born in London in 1975 and still live here. I could define myself, summing up in a few words my long working career, a great expert in the field of foot and foot problems. Immediately after graduating in Motor Science I started working in an orthopaedics in which orthotics were made to measure for people with foot problems. In 1999 I was hired as Key Account Manager in a well-known chain of safety footwear and other personal protective equipment. Among my clients I had several industries, which I visited regularly to understand the needs of workers, both in terms of protection and comfort. During these years I have consolidated my knowledge on foot problems. Furthermore, I studied carefully the products I proposed: attending courses, participating in trade fairs and, often, accepting the invitation of manufacturers to visit the factories. I was thus able to observe closely the techniques and materials used to produce the best safety shoes. Since 2015 I have been collaborating with the PPE Academy for the content of Safety Shoes Today.
