Symptoms

Safety shoes against dyshidrosis

Dyshidrosis is a type of eczema or dermatitis, which mainly affects the gaps between the toes, the heels and the soles of the feet. However, this diseases can appear anywhere on the body.

The main symptoms of dyshidrosis are:

  • dry skin and itch
  • inflammation
  • thick, cracked skin
  • blisters

When the skin becomes dry and cracked, infections can occur. Untreated, the symptoms can get worse: the skin gets sorer and flushed, and it becomes harder to treat.

The symptoms can be very similar to those of athlete’s foot. Indeed, both diseases make the feet flushed and itchy, and they frequently affect the toes. The symptoms are, yet, the only thing in common these two conditions have: athlete’s foot is a contagious fungal infection caused by a fungus which thrives in warm and moist environments.

The treatments are totally different, too. For these reasons it is very important to get a correct diagnosis through the examination of a specialist.

The causes

Eczema can be the consequence or the aggravation of several factors, including:

  • Sweat: sweat makes the skin wet and can irritate the affected area further. If you wear shoes that are too tight, or made of low-quality materials or woolen or of synthetic, non-breathable materials, you will likely sweat more than necessary.
  • Allergic response: something in your shoes or socks may trigger an allergic reaction, indeed, your footwear and socks may be made of materials or colorants which may be skin irritants.
  • Friction between the skin and the shoes or socks: this happens rather often if tight shoes are used, and has particularly unpleasant consequences if your eczema is already sore, aching and itchy.

How to avoid pain

Safety shoes against dyshidrosis

Choose wide and comfortable safety shoes.

If you only have a mild case of eczema the treatment can be relatively easy: it’s important to keep the skin hydrated, and for that purpose a good moisturizer is enough. That will help keep your skin elastic and avoid the formation of wounds, which may lead to infections. However, asking for medical advice is always better than taking care of it yourself.

The expert's advice

One of the major problems of safety shoes, I would say perhaps one of the major factors of lack of comfort of work shoes, is the ability to breathe the foot. In some cases this is due to the cheapness of the materials used for the construction of the upper but for water resistant models it is a structural feature. There are manufacturers of safety shoes who are actively working on increasing the breathability of safety shoes. I advise you to pay close attention to the ability of the shoes to breathe at the time of purchase. The luckiest workers are those who do not have the risk of getting their feet wet as they will be able to select s1 or s1p safety shoes, which in themselves, not having water resistance, can be equipped with lighter materials, but the best advice is to touch the products with your hand and if you have dermatitis problems you must always try to choose shoes that have the greatest breathability, because allowing the air to circulate inside the shoe will keep the foot dry and will reduce all the problems of dermatitis. The best materials, basically the most breathable, are the knitted fabrics which, moreover, make the shoes very flexible, light and breathable; if you don’t have the risk of getting your feet wet I recommend this type of solution. If, on the other hand, you have the risk of getting your feet wet during your work, you will have to pay more attention to the quality of the materials because it will be the only factor that will allow your foot to breathe and therefore avoid dermatitis problems.

Do not forget that the quality of the materials also affects dermatitis from an allergological point of view; many cheap materials favor allergies and other problems related to the foot so a basic rule is to try to avoid buying cheap shoes. The health of the feet is fundamental for the workers and the purchase of a quality safety shoe is an investment in one of the most important tools to carry out one’s work well, the feet, considering that the safety shoe is worn 8-10 hours per day.

Safety shoes against dyshidrosis: the recommended products

As we have seen dyshidrosis is an eczematous reaction which leads to the formation of blisters and diffuse inflammation, causing severe itch and a burning sensation. The contact with water, detergents and solvents can worsen the symptoms.

If you are susceptible to this kind of this disease you should make sure your feet don’t get wet and don’t sweat too much during work. The best solution is the purchase of S2 or S3 safety shoes made of high-quality full grain leather, possibly shoes rather than boots or ankle-boots and equipped with breathable insoles made of fabric.

If you work in very moist environments and your feet often come into contact with water and other liquids, your safety shoes should also have the WR marking, which means they are waterproof. The waterproof membrane should be breathable: the best ones are those of Gore-tex, which are ideal to prevent this kind of sickness.

For those reasons I suggest that you buy safety shoes with the following characteristics:

  • if they have to be water resistant they must have breathable membranes, like I said Gore-tex are the best; they are mostly used to make safety footwear completely liquid-proof.
  • If you need S2 or S3 safety footwear than you should choose a model made of very soft and high-quality leather; if you can opt for S1 or S1P safety shoes, then you can get a pair made of fabric, even knitted.
  • Too tight shoes and shoes made of rigid materials are not recommended; you should choose wide and comfortable shoes, made of soft leather or fabric, to reduce the friction on the skin.
