Retrocalcaneal bursitis

Retrocalcaneal bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa (a small, cushioning sac located where tendons pass over areas of bone around the joints), which lies over the heel (calcaneum) where the Achilles tendon inserts. There are actually two bursa in that area: one is located between the heel and the Achilles tendon, and the other is closer to the surface, between the Achille’s tendon and the skin. When they’re inflamed, there is pain, and often also redness in the affected area. The workers who use rigid shoes and boots and who work in uncomfortable positions (e.g. squatting), are at higher risk of developing this disease.

Hence, retrocalcanear bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa situated between the calcaneus and the front surface of the Achille’s tendon. There are two bursa situated just above the point where the Achille’s tendon inserts.

In the front part, deeper, there is the retrocalcanear bursa, which is situated between the Achille’s tendon and the heel (the calcaneus).

In rear position and closer to the surface is the subcutaneous bursa. This bursa is located between the skin and the rear part of the Achille’s tendon. The inflammation of one or both these bursa can cause pain in the rear part of the heel and in the ankle.

If you suffer from heel bursitis your safety shoes against retrocalcaneal bursitis should have the following features:

  • flexible soles, preferably made of single-density PU, PU/PU or PU/TPU; EVA/rubber and PU/rubber are also acceptable if HRO soles (that is, soles resistant to the contact with hot surfaces) are needed;
  • the most flexible safety shoes are those with soles of soft leather like suede or textile, even knitted or crocheted;
  • you should prefer low shoes with the design “A” (low footwear), that is safety shoes and sandals;
  • If you can choose, you should wear S1 or S1P safety shoes, otherwise S2 are still better than S3;
  • a gel insole, especially in the heel area, would be of great help
  • there are also safety shoes with gel soles, which provide very good shock absorption especially in the heel area.
  • Safety shoes with toecaps that are too flat or tight are to be avoided, as well as shoes with tight tips and shoes of rigid materials (especially in the toecap area); you should prefer safety shoes with wide toecaps and of very soft leather or fabric, to reduce the friction of the skin.
