Safety shoes for bunions

Bunions are the commonest deformity of the forefoot, with an incidence between 23 % and 35 % of the population and it affects the inner border of the foot. Non-surgical treatment can relief the symptoms, but doesn’t correct the deformity of the big toe. Surgery is only recommended in certain cases, that is when the pain persists, and on the advice of a doctor.

Consequences of a bunion:

• Medial deflection of the first metatarsus

• Lateral deflection and/or rotation of the big toe

• Prominence, with or without swelling of the soft tissue of the first head of the metatarsus

This condition can lead to painful movements of the joint and difficulty in wearing some types of shoes, especially if it’s safety footwear.

Causes

Bunions can have different causes, including biomechanical, traumatic and metabolic factors.

The traumatic conditions that can cause a bunion include disfunctions with or without interarticular damage, damage of the soft tissues of the big toe and a series of dislocations.

The structural deformities that have been associated with bunions include the misalignment of the surface of the metatarsal joint, abnormal length of the metatarsus, metatarsus primus (elevates, varum or valgum), and the torsion of the femur backwards.

What are the problems caused by this disease?

This bone deformity consists in the formation of a bulge, a lump on the big toe, and leads to occasional or permanent pain, depending on the patient. Besides the inflammation, a bunion can have side effects on the other toes. As for footwear, having a bunion can interfere with the use of certain types of shoes.

At work, wearing tight safety shoes can obviously lead to further pain. The toecap, when present, also becomes a problem because in some cases the bone rubs against the shoe, which can lead to swelling.

Seeing an orthopedist to detect the source of the problem

The professional advice of an orthopedist will be of great help to fight this disease: your posture will be analyzed and the cause of the problem will be identified, then you will be advised the most adequate treatment for your specific case.

Safety shoes for bunions, possible treatments

There are four types of treatment to fight this problem:

1. Bunion-cover: this protection is reusable. It must be placed on the bulge, in order to relief the pain caused by the friction of the big toe against the shoes.

2. Toe-cover: ideal for preventing and relieving the pain on fingertips and toetips (caused by corns, calluses, aching nails or withlow).

3. Prosthesis: this allows a slow correction of the deformity, at the same time providing relief from joint pain and pain on the soles of the feet.

4. Bunion corrector: it’s made of an elastic material, and is particularly appropriate for bunions. It prevents the big toe from pushing towards the other toes, which may otherwise lead to painful corns or wounds.

Tips for easing the pain

• Choose very comfortable and large safety shoes

• Try out protective products, available in pharmacies, to absorb hits on the big toe. As described above, there are several types of products suitable for reducing the pressure on the feet, ease the pain and tend to this annoying condition.

Safety shoes for bunions: recommended products

I suggest that you choose safety footwear with the following characteristics:

• the toecap must be wide. Generally the widest toecaps are the composite ones and the ones made of glass fiber.

• Shoes Mondopoint 11 or 12, which normally have big toecaps and wide uppers.

• leather as soft as possible, or even cloth shoes.

I would not recommend safety shoes with a tight, small or low toecap, shoes with a tight tip or with rigid leather, especially in the toe area. Shoes of a soft material will reduce the friction on the bunion.

The expert's advice

Hallux valgus is one of the very common problems of the foot, and is one of those that we find in our everyday life, as the problem does not occur only when there is a safety shoe but with any type of shoe .

What makes every person with hallux valgus to relieve pain in walking is to choose a soft and not too tight shoe, and what we therefore recommend doing for the safety shoe is exactly the same thing: choosing a shoe that isn’t too narrow but at the same time has the material of the upper very soft.

So if you work in contact with liquids you will have to choose a water resistant but very soft leather, instead in the case where you work in dry environments where there is no risk of getting your feet wet it will be much more convenient to choose a shoe in fabric or at least with fabric in the area that comes into contact with the protuberance of the foot, corresponding to the hallux valgus.

  1. My problem with safety footwear is that l get pain on the top part of one if my feet, even though l have purchased the right shoes. It seems to be the non metal toe cap that is the cause. Any ideas please. I have Cofra wide fit, high toed shoe. I wear proper walking socks to try and reduce the pressure even though my feet get quite hot in them. They are unisex footwear.
