What is an onycopathy?

An onycopathy is a disease which affects the toenails and the connected structures; it can be painful and sometimes even crippling, influencing the quality of life of workers who are affected. Moreover, it can contribute to the development of other problems. Foot care is essential for the mobility and independence of workers.

What are the disadvantages of this sickness?

Onychopathy cause occasional or even permanent pain, depending on the subject. Besides inflammation, they can have several side-effects on the other toes. In addition to that, this disease can interfere with the use of certain types of footwear.

An onychopathy, or simply nail disease, is a sickness or deformity of the nails. Even though the nails are produced by the skin and are in many fields considered a part of the same structure, this kind of disease are classified separately, because the symptoms and consequences are different, and they are sometimes related to other medical conditions. Certain nail diseases, especially those which lead to inflammation or infection, may require medical assistance.

A medical examination may also suggest presence of other disorders. Certain nail diseases are not easy to identify, so the thorough examination of a dermatologist is necessary. Besides, a podiatrist may be the first to notice changes in the state of health of your nails.

Safety shoes against onychopathy: recommended products

Wearing tight shoes at work can, of course, worsen the pain. Sometimes the part of the big toe where the bone is prominent rubs against the toecap, which can lead to inflammations.

I recommend that you buy safety shoes with the following characteristics:

  • a wide toecap. Usually composite toecaps or those of glass fiber are the widest.
  • safety shoes Mondopoint 11 or 12, which, on average, have wider toecaps and uppers and leave the feet free to move, especially in the front part.
  • shoes of soft leather, or even of knitted fabric.

The deterioration of the nails due to the footwear being too tight or too rigid can be avoided or, at least, relieved following those tips:

  • I wouldn’t recommend safety shoes that have toecaps with a flat shape, pointy shoes and shoes of too rigid materials; you should opt for safety footwear with wide toecaps, of soft leather or fabric to avoid friction.
  • Choose the size of your safety shoes carefully, and make sure that your toes never touch the toecap, and that they have enough space to move.

I was born in London in 1975 and still live here. I could define myself, summing up in a few words my long working career, a great expert in the field of foot and foot problems. Immediately after graduating in Motor Science I started working in an orthopaedics in which orthotics were made to measure for people with foot problems. In 1999 I was hired as Key Account Manager in a well-known chain of safety footwear and other personal protective equipment. Among my clients I had several industries, which I visited regularly to understand the needs of workers, both in terms of protection and comfort. During these years I have consolidated my knowledge on foot problems. Furthermore, I studied carefully the products I proposed: attending courses, participating in trade fairs and, often, accepting the invitation of manufacturers to visit the factories. I was thus able to observe closely the techniques and materials used to produce the best safety shoes. Since 2015 I have been collaborating with the PPE Academy for the content of Safety Shoes Today.
