Instep and arch: the differences

The instep is that bone structure situated on the upper part of the foot. The arch, on the other hand, is that curve on the lower part of the foot, between the heel and the forefoot. The instep stretches from the upper part of the toes to the front of the ankle. The arch goes from the back of the toes to the heel.

The consequences of having high insteps

The most common problem of this condition is the continuous friction between the instep and some parts of the shoes such as the tongue. Another common one is the continuous feeling of having tight shoes.

Moreover, as a consequence of the arching of the feet, the toes can develop a claw-like deformity, with calluses on the tips.
In all this cases it can prove difficult to wear safety footwear, so you will have to look for a model which is appropriate for your condition. It is also possible to use tailor-made orthotics, to reduce the pressure on the feet.

Safety shoes for high instep: recommended products

Those who suffer from high insteps always feel their shoes are tight, especially in the upper area. That part rubs against the tongue all the time, and leads to reddening and chapped skin. So I recommend you:

  • large and possibly low shoes (meaning that shoes are better than boots and ankle boots)
  • wide shoes (Mondopoint 11 or 12). Shoes of that size on average have larger toecaps and uppers.
  • closing systems like Boa or Velcro, which are easy to adjust even during work activities
  • safety shoes made of soft leather or fabric (even knitted or crocheted), because those materials don’t apply much pressure on the foot
  • safety shoes with a very comfortable and padded tongue
  • I wouldn’t recommend casual or pointy shoes, shoes of rigid leather (especially in the upper) and, in general, cheap footwear. You should look for safety footwear with a wide toecap and made of soft leather or fabric, so that they won’t rub against your instep.
  • In general if you have high insteps it’s advisable you get low shoes, or even safety sandals, which are another recommended type of footwear if you have this condition.

I was born in London in 1975 and still live here. I could define myself, summing up in a few words my long working career, a great expert in the field of foot and foot problems. Immediately after graduating in Motor Science I started working in an orthopaedics in which orthotics were made to measure for people with foot problems. In 1999 I was hired as Key Account Manager in a well-known chain of safety footwear and other personal protective equipment. Among my clients I had several industries, which I visited regularly to understand the needs of workers, both in terms of protection and comfort. During these years I have consolidated my knowledge on foot problems. Furthermore, I studied carefully the products I proposed: attending courses, participating in trade fairs and, often, accepting the invitation of manufacturers to visit the factories. I was thus able to observe closely the techniques and materials used to produce the best safety shoes. Since 2015 I have been collaborating with the PPE Academy for the content of Safety Shoes Today.

  1. I have a high instep and need to wear steel toe wellies for work. I’ve been unable to find comfortable footwear and am experiencing pain that persists from wearing unsuitable footwear. Is there a solution that you’d recommend?

    • Hello Olivier, the recommendation is to find safety shoes with a wide width. For sure your feet will be more confortable in a wider safety shoe. Please write us in private if you still can’t find them, we’ll help you to do that.
