Are you a driver or otherwise work as a driver? In this article, we will talk about the best safety footwear for drivers.

Each job has several characteristics and risks, and each worker should wear the safety shoes that are most suited to their profession, in order to be adequately protected.

Are there specific types of safety footwear for drivers? And if so, are you wearing them?

Let’s find out everything there is to know about this type of job, and about the models of safety footwear that are recommended to do it safely:

  • work environments
  • risks
  • what are the recommended safety shoes for this sector?

In the transport sector, drivers are divided into self-employed ones and those who are on a fee or contract. Another distinction is that between drivers carrying passengers and drivers who drive means for the transportation of goods.

Of course, excluding the risk related to car accidents, which is the same for all the categories, the feet of drivers who carry things are more at risk because drivers take care of the loading, unloading, and delivery of goods themselves.

Driving for hours requires the use of very comfortable and breathable footwear, because of the high microclimate inside the vehicles. On the contrary, when getting out of the truck or van, you are exposed to the unpredictability of the atmospheric agents during the transfer of loads, often with the aid of forklifts or dollies, on terrains with the most varied characteristics.

While driving, the work environment is characterised by a very high level of vibrations, very narrow spaces and static positions maintained for long times; on the contrary, when getting out of the vehicle you face sudden environmental changes, such as in the temperature and in the posture and your feet are exposed to sudden stress, strong impacts and dangers.

Here is a list of the risks for your feet, against which you must be protected using the best safety footwear for drivers:

  • risks related to the manual handling of the loads
  • crushing your toes due to heavy objects or packages falling on them during the loading and unloading phases
  • slipping on wet, greasy or uneven terrain
  • crushing your toes due to forklifts or vehicles

this is not a risk, but a lack of comfort: footwear lacking flexibility

As you can see, there are different situations in which you run the risk of getting hurt. Working safely is both your right and your duty, so you must get yourself a good pair of safety shoes for your job, and choose knowingly the model that will protect you the best, but it must be also comfortable.

In the specific case, we recommend you choose some flexible footwear with the best basic features (slip-resistant and preferably a non-metallic toecap) of safety shoes. You could also try some safety shoes with a sporty look. Moreover, if they also have some reference to the car world, even better! If, instead, you must wear a uniform, then you can use safety footwear with a classic look.

Robert Frog
I was born in London in 1975 and still live here. I could define myself, summing up in a few words my long working career, a great expert in the field of foot and foot problems. Immediately after graduating in Motor Science I started working in an orthopaedics in which orthotics were made to measure for people with foot problems. In 1999 I was hired as Key Account Manager in a well-known chain of safety footwear and other personal protective equipment. Among my clients I had several industries, which I visited regularly to understand the needs of workers, both in terms of protection and comfort. During these years I have consolidated my knowledge on foot problems. Furthermore, I studied carefully the products I proposed: attending courses, participating in trade fairs and, often, accepting the invitation of manufacturers to visit the factories. I was thus able to observe closely the techniques and materials used to produce the best safety shoes. Since 2015 I have been collaborating with the PPE Academy for the content of Safety Shoes Today.
