In this article you will learn how to understand whether your safety shoes need replacement or not, and I will also reccommend some products that are more durable than most!

When should safety footwear be replaced? Check the following points:

  • the sole is worn, meaning that its profile has become flat (you risk to slip, bad posture and an abnormal gait due to insufficient foot support)
  • the sole is cracked (liquids may infiltrate)
  • the materials of the sole have become crumbly (the sole is hydrolysed)
  • the materials of the upper are torn, cracked or otherwise damaged (loss of upper stability, of impermeability and of protection)
  • The leather in the toecap area is torn or cracked (the toecap can move, a metallic one can rust and liquids can enter)
  • you feel that the toecap is not in place (loss of the basic safety characteristics)
  • you see traces of rust on the eyelets
  • the inner lining is torn and it scratches your feet (you can get seriously hurt this way)
  • the side zipper is blocked (loss of safety)

There are also parts which can be replaced without throwing the shoes away, that is the comfort insole and the strings

I was born in London in 1975 and still live here. I could define myself, summing up in a few words my long working career, a great expert in the field of foot and foot problems. Immediately after graduating in Motor Science I started working in an orthopaedics in which orthotics were made to measure for people with foot problems. In 1999 I was hired as Key Account Manager in a well-known chain of safety footwear and other personal protective equipment. Among my clients I had several industries, which I visited regularly to understand the needs of workers, both in terms of protection and comfort. During these years I have consolidated my knowledge on foot problems. Furthermore, I studied carefully the products I proposed: attending courses, participating in trade fairs and, often, accepting the invitation of manufacturers to visit the factories. I was thus able to observe closely the techniques and materials used to produce the best safety shoes. Since 2015 I have been collaborating with the PPE Academy for the content of Safety Shoes Today.
