If your feet are often sweaty, no matter what the temperature is, you may suffer from hyperhidrosis, a condition which can become rather unpleasant. However, wearing the right type of footwear and taking good care of your feet can help you to keep this problem under control.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis consists in sweating too much, a common problem which leads to several problems. Is is estimated that 2 / 3 % of the population suffers from excessive sweating of the palms of their hands and of the soles of their feet (Palmoplantar hyperhidrosis). The increased sweating appears around the age of 13 (on average). If left untreated, the symptoms can last throughout life.

What is hyperhidrosis?

There are two types of hyperhidrosis.

Primary (or focal) hyperhidrosis: it’s the excessive sweating of the hands and feet for no apparent reason.

Secondary (or generalized) Hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating in the whole body, or in a rather extended area, and can be caused by high temperatures, some medical conditions or the consumption of medicines.

What causes hyperhidrosis?

Although neurological, endocrinal, infectious or other systemic diseases can cause hyperhidrosis, in most cases the disorder appears in perfectly healthy people. Heat and emotions can trigger the symptoms in some individuals, but most people affected by this condition sweat abundantly all the time, regardless of the temperature and their mood.

Everybody sweats when it’s hot, especially while working, but in people affected by hyperhidrosis the sweat becomes so much it drips. This condition leads to very heavy sweating, often with no obvious causes.

Normally the sweat glands produce sweat, which is transported to the skin surface when the temperature rises, during physical activity, or when feeling stress or other strong emotions. When these factors are not present anymore, the nerves which activate the sweating are stopped.

In individuals suffering from hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, the sweat glands are not stopped, they stay active even when it’s not necessary, like at home with air conditioning, or while watching tv.

The causes of hyperhidrosis depend from the type of sweating. In most cases it is a harmless yet annoying inconvenience, but in some other cases the cause can be a medical condition which rarely disappears.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Through a systematic assessment of the causes and triggers of hyperhidrosis, followed by a proper treatment, many patients can experience improvements and obtain a better quality of life.

The expert's advice

The problem of excessive sweating of the feet often depends on causes that are outside the safety shoe, but whether it is a foot problem or not the shoe you wear can reduce the problem, if chosen with the right criteria.

What you have to do is first of all to understand if in your work you risk getting your feet wet due to contact with liquids or water. If yes, you should look for water-resistant shoes with excellent leather and excellent inner lining, while if you work in dry environments I recommend S1 or S1P shoes with suede-like materials or knitted fabrics that transpire a lot, better if with large perforations.

In short, the air must circulate in the shoe to make the foot drier, otherwise you will face problems of dermatitis, foot fungus etc.

Another trick is to take care of the sock, it must not be synthetic if possible or it must be in technical material, of those that dry quickly. Change them even twice a day.

Also better to have more than one inner sole and change it by putting the other to dry.

They are small investments for the well-being of your foot .. it’s worth it.

So, as we have seen, hyperhidrosis consists in increased sweating of the feet, beyond the necessary level. The amount of the increase is variable, and goes from small to representing a handicap at work.

The consequences are numerous: at work you’ll always have wet feet, and since sweat conducts heat, there the risk of having cold feet in winter and hot feet in summer. Your shoes may smell bad due to the growth of bacteria, and your shoes and socks will be always moist or wet.

That is why I suggest that you buy breathable safety shoes:

  • if you are required to wear water resistant safety footwear, which are waterproof and hence less breathable than other models non water resistant, I strongly suggest you choose a high-quality product because good leather and lining mean good breathability and a better microclimate inside the shoes. Choose safety shoes of full grain leather or high-quality microfiber, and inner lining which lets the humidity out.
  • If you need non water resistant safety shoes, make sure you get a pair made of breathable materials with wide perforations or even sandals if your work allows it. Ventilation must always come first.
  • The insole is important, too: a high-quality insole of polyurethane foam and with an antibacterial upper layer, ideally perforated and with activated carbon can be of great help.
  • Tie your shoes well (it’s important for your safety at work!) but not too tight, otherwise your skin won’t breathe.
  • Socks play an important role too. At work you should wear work or sport socks made of dri fit or other materials that absorb and release moisture, leaving the feet dry.
  • Don’t forget to perform the regular maintenance of your safety footwear: apply an antibacterial spray deodorant to the inside of the shoes, use foot powder and change your socks and insoles often.

In summary: breathables safety shoes of high-quality materials; change your socks very often; use products for the care of the feet; keep your feet always clean and healthy.
