Feet can smell for several reasons, but in most cases there are simple and effective treatments that can solve or reduce this problem in no time. Also known as bromhidrosis, excessive and smelly sweating happens during any season.

In most cases the reason for bad odor is excessive sweating, along with the mistake of using the same shoes every day.

Why do feet sweat?

Anyone can have sweaty feet, regardless of the temperature or the time of the year.

Moreover, there are higher chances of excessive sweating in case of works where it is necessary to be on your feet all day, in case of stress, or if you have a condition called hyperhidrosis, that makes you sweat more than normal. Fungal infections, like athlete’s foot, can lead to bad odor too.

In general you will experience bad odor when the sweat is absorbed by the socks or the shoes, and you keep using them nonetheless.

How to treat smelly feet

Safety shoes for smelly feet

There is a simple, fast and safe solution for reducing your foot problems.

Remember to wash your feet with an antibacterial soap. There are a lot of products for the hygiene of your feet, and if they’re used regularly, they will solve or reduce your problem in a short time.

Preventing bad odors

Keep your feet fresh and dry through good personal hygiene and by wearing different safety shoes in different days.

Choose safety shoes appropriate for smelly feet and, if possible, avoid wearing them two days in a row. It costs nothing to have two pairs of safety shoes and to alternate them: they will last twice as long anyways. If  you really don’t want to have two pairs of safety shoes at least buy an additional insole, and change it every day.

Wash and dry your feet carefully every day; change your socks at least once a day (ideally the socks should be of materials that help the transpiration).

Keep the nails of your feet short and clean and remove the dead skin. When it is moist, dead skin is the ideal habitat for bacteria.

If your feet tend to sweat abundantly, you may consider the following tricks:

clean the area between the toes with a cotton ball soaked in a disinfectant after the shower or bath: this will help to keep the area between your toes dry;

use a spray deodorant or foot powder;

breathable socks: some sport and work socks are particularly breathable, which will help keep your feet dry. Antibacterial socks contain substances which kill the bacteria that feed on sweat and produce bad odor;

wear safety shoes of leather or canvas, which are very breathable, unlike synthetic materials;

after work you should wear sandals or breathable shoes, and be barefoot as often as possible.

When is it advisable to see a doctor?

Bad smelling feet are a harmless problem, and normally also easy to fix. Sometimes, however, it can be a sign of a medical condition.

See your doctor if the solutions mentioned above don’t seem to work, or if you suspect your transpiration is higher than normal.

Your doctor may advise you a pharmacological antifungal treatment. There is also a therapy called iontophoresis, which consists in applying a light electric current to the feet, which are submerged in water.

The expert's advice

One of the major problems of safety shoes, I would say perhaps one of the major factors of lack of comfort of work shoes, is the ability to breathe the foot. In some cases this is due to the cheapness of the materials used for the construction of the upper but for water resistant models it is a structural feature. There are manufacturers of safety shoes who are actively working on increasing the breathability of safety shoes. I advise you to pay close attention to the ability of the shoes to breathe at the time of purchase. The luckiest workers are those who do not have the risk of getting their feet wet as they will be able to select non-water resistant safety shoes, which in themselves, not having water resistance, can be equipped with lighter materials, but the best advice is to touch the products with your hand and if you have stinky feet problems you should always try to choose shoes that have the greatest breathability, because allowing the air to circulate inside the shoe will keep your foot dry and will reduce all bad smell problems. The best materials, basically the most breathable, are the knitted fabrics which, moreover, make the shoes very flexible, light and breathable; if you don’t have the risk of getting your feet wet I recommend this type of solution. If, on the other hand, you have the risk of getting your feet wet during your work, you will have to pay more attention to the quality of the materials because it will be the only factor that will allow your foot to breathe and therefore avoid bad smell problems.

Do not forget that the quality of the materials also affects the feet from an allergological point of view; many cheap materials favor allergies and other problems related to the foot so a basic rule is to try to avoid buying cheap shoes. The health of the feet is fundamental for the workers and the purchase of a quality safety shoe is an investment in one of the most important tools to carry out one’s work well, the feet, considering that the safety shoe is worn 8-10 hours per day.

Often the cause of this problem is poor ventilation inside the shoes. The growth of bacteria can lead to bad odor and other complications, including infections.

Don’t forget to buy a good pair of well- safety shoes;

  • if you need waterproof safety shoes, often less breathable than others, you should choose a high-quality product. Indeed, cheap leather and lining are often not very breathable, and that would worsen your transpiration problem;
  • if you need summer or breathable safety shoes you should prefer breathable materials, perforated, or even safety sandals if your job allows them;
  • don’t neglect the insole: a good one of antibacterial PU foam, possibly with activated charcoal and perforated will be of great help;
  • tie your shoes well, but not too tight;
  • use sport or work shoes of dri fit or other materials that absorb moisture and keep the feet dry.
  • The best advice is still having two pairs of safety shoes and alternating them daily.

Finally, don’t forget the regular maintenance of the shoe with spray deodorant and anti-bacterial. Use foot powder and change your socks as often as possible, even more than once a day.
